Moths
A local expert, Stephen Howell, has made detailed observations of the moths and butterflies seen at Ashing Lane Nature Reserve. He recorded information during the summer months between 2015 and 2017 and here are the results. Stephen's moth photos (including species seen at ALNR) can be seen on the Dunholme Camera Club website, click here.
More new species have been identified in 2022, bringing the total to 300. There was a significant increase in the number of species recorded in 2016 over 2015 - 121 as opposed to 99.
Many of these are micro moths which have wingspans of under 20mm - so identification and compilation of this list is quite a feat! Find out more about these exquisite creatures on the UK Moths website, or just enjoy the names.
No data was collected during 2020 and 2021, but we are pleased that Stephen could get back to work in 2022, increasing the total list to 300 species. In his end of year report, Stephen remarked that with regard to the mix of plant species "The quality and quantity of [moth] specimens show it is working. I note you are planting honeysuckle in the Monks Wood. I am predicting that there will be an increase in Hawk moths (Elephant; Small elephant ; Poplar). It also puts in place the environment where certain butterflies, eg white admiral, can thrive."
