What is the Nettleham Woodland Trust?

Founded in 2006, the Nettleham Woodland Trust was formed with the
long-term objective of providing the people of Nettleham and the
neighbouring villages with a much-needed amenity for recreational purposes, including walking, bird watching, horse riding, cycling and education and at the same time encourag-ing a greater diversity and richer variety of wildlife in the local environment.

Who is it for?

Everyone.

Why is it necessary?

There are already a number of public footpaths radiating out from the village, but the intensively agricultural nature of the surrounding countryside means that there are actually very few areas close to the village where people are free to wander and picnic and where children can play freely and safely.

In recent years, there has been a steady decline in many of our native wildlife species and, in addition to providing a new leisure amenity for the community, new habitats would be created which
would encourage a greater variety of wildlife into the local area mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, trees, shrubs, wildflowers and insects.

When will it happen?

Over the coming years, the intention is to gradually acquire small areas of land, by purchasing or leasing on behalf of the Nettleham Woodland Trust, for the purpose of planting community woodland, creating wildflower meadows and ponds and other attractive natural
habitats around the village.

It will be an investment for the future - the children and grandchildren of those who already live here and also for future generations of newcomers to the area.

Are we the first to do this?

No.There are numerous groups up and down the country which have recognised the need for such amenities and have successfully started similar projects in their own localities.

How can I help?

This is a vision for the future and, in order to make Nettleham an even better place to live for those that follow us, we can work together as a community now.

Firstly, of course, there is the need to acquire small areas of land on which the new woodland can be planted. Land is expensive and funds are needed to enable purchase (or long-term lease) of suitable pieces of land around the village.

The Nettleham Woodland Trust will be registered as a charitable trust and anyone is very welcome to contribute financially by regular annual subscription, by making a donation or perhaps by leaving a legacy in a will.

And we shall need an enthusiastic group of volunteers willing to participate in planting and maintenance of the woodlands - a perfect
way to meet like-minded people and make new friends who share similar ideas and interests.

It is anticipated that additional opportunities for financial contributions to the Nettleham Woodland Trust will become available in the future, for instance buying a tree, sponsoring a bench seat, etc.

If you do not wish to make a financial contribution to the Nettleham
Woodland Trust but would like to help in other ways, for instance in planting trees, maintenance of the woodland, etc, please complete the Contact name and details only.

What are the benefits?

As well as providing a pleasant location for residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of leisure activities, the areas of woodland and other natural habitats will enable local school-children to study many
different aspects of natural history, ecology and the environment.

And of course, planting trees also assists in reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - a major factor in global warming and climate change which is currently posing a major threat to the future well-being of our planet.

This is a unique opportunity to leave a worthwhile and lasting legacy to the generations of our descendants still to come.
