EVENTS 2009 During 2009, Nettleham Woodland Trust organised two tree planting events at Monks Wood, Ashing Lane , Dunholme. The first was a month of planting from February to March. During the week, school and college groups came and on four Saturdays families and individuals came to help plant around 12,000 trees and shrubs. In early December 2009, a further week of tree planting events took place and 6,000+ trees were planted in the north field. On Saturday 5 th December, we took part in “Tree O’Clock” – a Guiness Book of World Records attempt to plant the most number of trees in one hour in multiple locations, which was organised by BBC Breathing Places. Around 120 adults and children came to take part in this exciting event at Monks Wood and between 11am and 12 noon , a fantastic 2566 trees were planted. Nettleham Scouts provided refreshments – bacon butties and hot soup cooked on the camp fire. On Sunday 6 th December, our last community tree planting day, as well as individuals and families, members of Lincoln Conservation Group spent all day planting trees and shrubs. The total number of trees and shrubs planted at Monks Wood during 2009 was upwards of 20,000 and most of them were planted by local people, local schools, colleges and youth groups. What trees are growing at Monks Wood ? This is a native woodland and the main species are oak, ash, silver birch and alder. In the north field we have also planted 1200 small leaved lime trees. Other trees planted are field maple, wild cherry, crab apple and holly. Shrubs include hazel, guelder rose, wayfaring tree, dogwood, wild privet and dog rose. Monks Wood is a community woodland created by the community.
